Use P_ON and P_OFF in Omron PLC Programming

In the Omron PLC we have got two system Flags for Permanently On and Permanently Off Conditions. These PLC Bits Proves Very Useful while Troubleshooting the PLC Program. Generally after making the complete plc program when we commission the PLC Panel at site then at that time we need to test many things , so these bits make the task much easier.

How to Use P_on and P_off on Omron PLC :-

In our earlier tutorial we have already understood about the the PLC Internal Memory System Bits. When we make the PLC Program at a earlier stage of development than we have to include all the function and logic in it . But at the later stage we have to cut something out of it or add new logic and program sections.

Suppose that if we want that a particular rung condition should always be true , thus in this case we can use P_ON system flag.
Also while troubleshooting the PLC program if we want to cut the on condition of certain rung than we can use P_off.

To use the P_on and P_off in omron PLC , just input a contact and then select down from the options. Also you can enter the address directly. For P_On the address is CF113 and for P_Off it is CF114. See the Below Picture.

Also we have attached a sample PLC Program containing the P_on and P_Off.

PLC Program For use OF P_on and P_Off.

Understanding the Role of Instrumentation in Automation

In almost all the Major Industries and plants, Instrumentation is the thing with which we need to see on every day basis. Instrumentation plays a key role in the smooth operation of any Plant. So every automation engineer should understand and Analise the aspects of Instrumentation.

Instrumentation - The controlling Power :-

What is Instrumentation? Instrumentation is the art of measuring the value of some plant parameter. Every plant has the need of measuring some process parameter as temperature , flow or level. These instruments process these parameters and then a provide a proportional output accordingly. The most common output form are 0 to 10 V , 4 to 20mA and 20-100 kPa pneumatic signal.

In this series of tutorials we will see that how the different plant parameters are measured with the help of Instruments. As a PLC Programmer we are always interested in getting the analog Input , but this time we will go one step back and try to understand the Instrumentation.

Pressure Measurement Device Working :-

In this Section we will try to understand the operation of Pressure Detectors bourdon tubes, diaphragms, bellows, forced balance and variable capacitance. Pressure is the parameter which is of utmost importance in power plants. In all power plant the value of pressure is measured at various stages such as steam pressure, feed water pressure, condenser pressure, lubricating oil pressure and many more.Pressure is actually the measurement of force acting on area of surface.

Pressure = Force / Area
The unit of pressure is pounds per square inch (PSI) in British units or Pascals (Pa) in metric. As one PSI is approximately 7000 Pa, we often use kPa and MPa as units of pressure.

How Pressure Value is Measured by Instruments :-

The main objective or principle by which instruments measure the value of pressure is produce a dial indication, control operation or a standard (4 - 20 mA) electronic signal that represents the pressure in a process.
Most of the sensors produce a linear motion respective to the pressure applied and this we get to know about the value of acting pressure.

In our next part we will see about the operating principle of different types of pressure transmitters and Instruments. Till then you can subscribe to get all latest updates.Subscribe to Automation-Talk by Email.

Set Multiple Bits in One Instruction - SETA Omron PLC Programming

In the field of PLC programming, we must keep our self-update about the latest plc programming instructions. A plc program can be made in various ways for the same logic, but we always should try to make the plc program in the shortest way to achieve a good scan time and increase efficiency.

Set Multiple Bits in One Instruction - SETA Omron PLC Programming

SETA Omron PLC Programming Instruction

We all know about the popular SET instruction which is available in all the PLC used for SET of a particular bit. Think if we sometimes need to set more than one bit at a time, then this instruction can be beneficial. The instruction is available in all the Omron PLC for setting multiple bits at a time.

Instruction Syntax:- SETA D N1 N2

Where:- D is the beginning word, N1 is the beginning bit in D and N2 is the number of Bits.

For example, if we write that SETA d200 #5 #4, then when this instruction is executed than the bit no 5 to 9 are set in D100.

SETA(530) turns ON N2 bits, beginning from bit N1 of D, and continuing to the left (more-significant bits). All other bits are left unchanged. (No changes will be made if N2 is set to 0.)Bits turned ON by SETA(530) can be turned OFF by any other instructions, not just RSTA(531).

RSTA Omron PLC Programming Instruction :-

Similarly to reset the multiple bits at a time we can use RSTA instruction. The syntax is same as for that of SETA. RSTA(531) turns OFF N2 bits, beginning from bit N1 of D, and continuing to the left (more-significant bits). All other bits are left unchanged. (No changes will be made if N2 is set to 0.)

Bits turned OFF by RSTA(531) can be turned ON by any other instructions, not just SETA(530).

Note:- SETA(530) can be used to turn ON bits in data areas that are normally accessed by words only, such as the DM areas.
Note:- RSTA(531) can be used to turn OFF bits in data areas that are normally accessed by words only, such as the DM areas.

P&F is a well known company in the field of sensors. P&F manufactures some of the most wanted sensors which are used in the critical applications. In many industries very exact precision positioning is required. P&F have a wide range of vision sensor for such applications.

High Precision Vision Sensor VOS120-FFPL-200-IR by P&F :-

This sensor has been specially developed for Hig precision positioning of high-bay racking operating equipment. This can operate in two axis i.e x and y axis. It detects the position of holes and their deviation if any from the normal Position. The operating range of this sensor is from 15o to 250 mm and the optical resolution also depends upon the sensing distance.

This sensor has got a RS232 interface and all the position deviation of the holes are output through this interface only in ASCII Data. In addition to this , the sensor also provide four digital outputs as -X,+X ,-Y or +Y depending on the deviation of the hole in x or y axis.

ASCII Communication Between Sensor and PLC :-

The communication between the PLC and P&F Vision Sensor takes place in the form of instruction or data messages. The format of the Instruction sent to the sensor is as follows:-
Byte 0 :-- STX
Byte 1 :-- Message Type
Byte 2 :-- ASCII Instruction Code
Byte 3 :-- CR
Byte 4 :-- LF

ASCII Instruction Code and Their Meaning in P&F Vision Sensor :-
Instruction Code ----------------------------------------------------------Meaning
G----------------------------------------------Switch Sensor to Continuous Mode.
S----------------------------------------------Trigger Single Measurement
I----------------------------------------------Deactivate Sensor
A----------------------------------------------Activate Image Storage Mode.
O----------------------------------------------Deactivate Image Storage Mode.
W-------------------------------------Save the setting of ISM in Non Volatile memory
T-------------------------------------Accept current position as Normal Position.

When the sensor is activated all the results are continuously calculated and sent out. If the sensor is de-activated than no measurements are done.
After receiving the command instruction from PLC the sensor sends the acknowledge of each Command back to PLC. The acknowledge can be of three different types.
Q------- Acknowledged , F -- Fail , U --- Unknown.
